Storing water safely at home

Tap water can deteriorate in a poorly kept container. Five simple rules to keep it safe.

AwarenessPublished

Many households store water in tanks, jerrycans or jars. This is often necessary, but water that is safe at the tap can become contaminated during storage.

Five simple rules

  1. Use a container kept only for drinking water, clean and with a lid.
  2. Keep it closed, out of the sun and away from dust.
  3. Draw water through a tap or with a clean ladle, never with your hands or a dipped cup.
  4. Clean the container regularly and replace stored water.
  5. Raise tanks off the ground, away from wastewater and animals.
