During very hot spells, water use rises everywhere at once. The network is then under heavy strain, especially in neighbourhoods at the far end of the pipes.
What everyone can do
- Water plants early in the morning or in the evening, when evaporation is lowest.
- Wash the car with a bucket rather than a hose.
- Turn off the tap while washing hands or dishes, or brushing teeth.
- Check your fittings: toilet cisterns, taps and tank floats.
